Why Urban Airspace Security Demands Definitive Drone (UAV) Monitoring

Recent incidents at airports and military installations in Europe are a global warning sign for urban airspace security. What was once a theoretical concern is now manifesting as an operational crisis, demanding a reliable and immediate technological response.
At Aerial Grid, we are proud to be involved in developing these solutions, working to mitigate the potential harms that come with the rapid progress of drone technology.
The new reality: systematic incidents and the risk to critical infrastructure
Recent news is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of our critical infrastructure.
Mass shutdowns: The presence of unauthorised drones is enough to close airspace, causing costly cascading effects across the global air network. Munich Airport in Germany was forced to repeatedly suspend operations after drone sightings, with pilots pointing to deliberate disruption. In Germany, airports in Saxony recorded eleven unauthorised drone sightings in 2025 alone.
Collisions and accidents: In Canada, a drone collided with a Skyjet aircraft — the first incident of its kind, according to the Minister of Transport. A drone also collided with a firefighting aircraft in California, USA, near the Palisades fire.
The pattern of recent incidents suggests something more than amateur operators, raising concern about activity directed at national security and essential infrastructure.
Europe on alert: The succession of drone sightings in Norway and Denmark, which forced the closure of airports, was classified as a “systematic operation” and a “hybrid attack” by authorities. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that “our critical infrastructure is at risk.”
Identification challenge: At the main naval base in Karlskrona, Sweden, unidentified drones were sighted over the archipelago, just a few kilometres from the military installation. Despite multiple reports and an investigation for violating aviation law, none of the devices were recovered and no suspects were identified — highlighting the failure of traditional systems to link the device to the operator.
SkyRadar: the necessary defence for airspace security
To counter this complex challenge, cities, infrastructure managers, and security agencies need a surveillance platform that goes beyond mere detection. That is why we developed SkyRadar.
SkyRadar is a surveillance and management platform — UAV monitoring infrastructure — that enables secure, real-time drone visibility, transforming unregulated airspace into a monitored and controllable environment.
The advantages of SkyRadar
Visibility and tracking: Recent incidents prove that knowing a drone is present is only the first step; you need to track it reliably.
Long-range sensors: SkyRadar combines proprietary sensors to offer BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) surveillance.
Real-time tracking: We offer real-time tracking of UAVs in public and restricted zones, providing complete operational situational awareness.
Regulatory compliance: The inability to link a drone to an operator is the main obstacle to compliance.
Multi-protocol Remote ID: SkyRadar is compatible with ASTM and IETF Remote ID standards. It not only identifies the UAV but links it directly to operator data in real time, allowing security agencies to act against non-compliant vehicles.
UTM/ATM integration: SkyRadar ensures fluid, plug-and-play integration with UAS Traffic Management (UTM) and Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems.
Compliance ready: Our solution provides reliable data and flight-stability insights, crucial for monitoring fleet health and ensuring compliance-ready insights for auditing.
Don't wait for the next incident
These incidents and the global collision risks are only the beginning. As drone usage proliferates, the risk to urban security and critical infrastructure only increases.
It's not just about security; it's about empowering the future of urban aviation in a responsible and protected manner.
